We all need to take a break every now and again. It’s so important to take some time out away from work, our daily routine and all the demands of everyday life in order to keep our stress levels in check.

Unfortunately, it often takes an illness or some other factor out of our control to get us to pause, reflect upon our lives and how we are living. When we take a break, we’re not shirking responsibility; we’re taking care of ourselves so we’ll have the stamina to function at our best.

The body is designed to respond to short bursts of stress, but when stress is prolonged and the stress response is triggered repeatedly and on a regular basis this is where the real health problems set in. At this point, even positive events can feel overwhelming as we’re not able to respond from a place of strength or clarity.

Taking time out benefits

Obviously, we feel less stressed when we’re in a relaxing environment. Vacations and even shorter breaks where we get some ‘time out’ from the demands of life can be a great way to clear our minds. Giving us a chance to take a break from our day to day life so we can restore ourselves physically and mentally, getting back to a healthier and happier place. Taking some time out reminds us how to enjoy life again, allows us to reset the focus on our work and also results in more harmonious and pleasurable relationships.

Whether you go near or far, taking time out is for you and you only. It will mean your work is more effective, your family see a happier and calmer you, it may also help you to see your personal or professional problems in a different light.

When you definitely need a break

It’s pretty obvious to most of us when we need to take some time out and it’s usually when we start to feel a sense of burnout or start feeling overwhelmed. However, we all respond differently under stressful situations and there are some general warning signs. If you’re experiencing some of the following effects, it’s a good idea to start planning some down time, even if it’s just a weekend away to recharge your batteries.

You can’t focus – You’re quite irritable – You’re tired all the time – You suffer from insomnia – You feel overwhelmed –You’re making mistakes –You begin neglecting things – You’re lacking motivation – Lacking drive at moment.
